As a guest on one of the ships of the Volendam Marken Express, you will experience the holiday feeling from the moment you step on board. Enjoy snacks and drinks at The Captains Bar during the crossing. Whether you take a seat on the lower or upper deck of our ships, you will always have a splendid view and a wonderful break during your cruise on the Markermeer.
We sail on unique, authentic ships. Our heated boats are equipped with a toilet, bar and sound system. The panorama deck offers an impressive view over the water.

For almost 100 years, the Marken Express has sailed on and off to the ports of Volendam and Marken daily. With our expertise and hospitality, the Marken Express is your all-in-one shop for visiting the famous villages.
Our rich maritime history goes back to the year 1933, when six families consisting of fishermen and boatmen joined hands. The idea was to create a transport connection for the then island of Marken with the mainland. That family culture is still visible in the company.
The Volendam Marken Express is a household name in the two fishing villages. We are actively involved in local people, businesses and events.
History
The Volendam Marken Express was founded in 1933 by six families from Volendam, Marken and Monnickendam. They joined forces to create a ferry service connecting Marken with the mainland. In fact, until the construction of the dam in 1957, Marken was an island and therefore only accessible by a trip over water. For easy trade, a ferry that sailed on and off daily was desirable.
Initially, the Marken Express was mainly a ferry service for locals. However, the trip between the villages soon became popular among tourists. Around 1912, there was a direct connection between Marken and Amsterdam, the 'Harbour-Stoombootdienst'.
Tourists used this connection to discover the island as a holiday or day trip destination. With the sailing routes of the Marken Express, these tourists could later also easily reach Volendam. Ever since the early 20th century, the two fishing villages have been tourist attractions. On a visit, you will quickly realise why they have always remained so popular. Despite the popularity and flow of visitors, these places have never lost their authenticity.
