Visit Woltje's Backery
When Woltje from Volendam was introduced to the Dutch syrup waffle in Gouda, she decided to take the recipe home with her. In her bakery, the Volendam waffle was born, which is truly different from other syrup waffles. Of course, if you are in Volendam, you have to taste it yourself!
Your day out in Volendam and Marken will give you a special insight into Woltje's bakery. Learn more about this bakery and the old traditions in the small museum, where you will taste the atmosphere of Woltje's life. You take part in the demonstration to see how a syrup waffle is made. And it doesn't stop at watching... After the demonstration, enjoy the waffles during the delicious tasting!
Sailing with the Volendam Marken Express
A visit to Volendam or Marken naturally involves a boat trip. Sail along the Markermeer to visit Marken and Volendam. The beautiful harbours are best admired from the water. During the 30-minute trip, you will learn a lot about the differences and the fishing villages themselves. In the meantime, you can enjoy the breathtaking views over the Markermeer and its beautiful harbours.
Learn how to make clogs the old-fashioned way
In Marken, visit "de Klomp", the only steam clog factory in the world. Clogs are still made here according to a tradition that goes back more than 100 years. You will see how a clog maker simply makes a shoe from a block of wood. The machines are from 1906 and the steam engine from 1913, so you will really go back in time. Clogs used to be worn mainly by labourers and farmers, wooden clogs protected the wearer's feet during long working days. Now they are the perfect footwear for the garden and the home. Abroad, the wooden shoe is almost synonymous with the Dutch, making it one of the most iconic souvenirs of our country. Of course, you can also try on clogs in your size and buy your own pair.
